Olympic medal winning runner Sonia O’Sullivan has teamed up with international agency Concern Worldwide, to promote the charity’s involvement in Belfast Marathon 2010.

Alongside Marie Curie, Concern will benefit from sponsorship raised by runners and walkers in what is one of Northern Ireland’s biggest fundraising events which takes place on Monday 3 May 2010.

The world champion runner encouraged as many people as possible to take up the challenge of competing in 2010, whether it be in the fun run, a leg of the relay, walking or going the full 26 miles.

“A marathon is a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get involved with sports while getting together for a fun day out,” said Sonia, speaking on behalf of Concern Worldwide, “Taking part can give you a great sense of achievement and provides an excellent opportunity to raise money for some of the world’s most worthy causes. I would very much encourage everyone to participate too.”

Speaking at the launch of the Marathon, Sonia spoke of her admiration of Concern’s work and of people she met when she visited Concern funded projects in Ethiopia.

“We’re so pleased to be involved with the Belfast City Marathon and would encourage people to consider taking part and raising funds for our vital overseas work. The Marathon isn’t just for serious runners, there are events to suit all ages and abilities. Whether you’re running, walking, or sponsoring a friend, your support will make a different to some of the poorest communities in the world” said Deirdre Murphy, Corporate Fundraising Manager for Concern.

Runners raising sponsorship for Concern will receive training tips from Sonia, to help them reach their targets and complete their run. Funds raised will go to support Concern’s long term development projects in 28 of the world’s poorest countries across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
