Your donations help fund world class research
09 August 2019
Ever wondered what BART stands for or what it does? We are Belfast Arthroplasty Research Trust and are known for funding quality joint replacement research.
Our staff have just finished a huge clinical trial aiming to reduce blood loss in hip and knee replacement patients at Musgrave Park Hospital. The trial recruited over 1,000 patients and BART funded £500,000 towards the study. We all know losing blood is bad but high blood loss during a hip or knee replacement can significantly increase a patient’s risk of complications which means it can take longer for them to recover. This is not only bad news for the patient, but also impacts on hospital resources for example patients may stay longer in hospital and could require blood transfusions.
This is just one example of where your money goes but BART funds many important research studies all aiming to improve patient care. You may know someone who has had or needs a joint replacement. It is a life changing operation but at the moment too many people are waiting in pain and by 2030 the number of joint replacements required will have doubled, so more of this research is needed now. There is so much more we can do to help joint replacement patients but WE NEED YOUR HELP. Will you #TakePart4BART in the 2019 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon on Sunday the 22nd of September?
