Training Tuesday Update from Stuart Kennedy 13 August

Official Coach Stuart Kennedy shares his latest #TrainingTuesday update!  Stuart is coaching our Challenge 13.1 team who are all training for their 1st Half Marathon - in Belfast on Sunday 22 September!

 

“6 weeks to go until you are standing at the starting line of the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon.  We are going to look at reducing race day nerves...not always a negative thing as long as they don’t impede on your performance. 

 

Here are a few tips that will help you cope with race day nerves:

 

1: Run some other races in preparation of your big day. This will give you invaluable experiential learning.

 

2: Race day gear: for your next few long runs, try out the shorts, vest, t-shirt, & socks that you will be wearing on race day.  One week out, put them away for race day.

 

3: Nutrition & hydration: over the next 5 weeks try out different meals & drink the right amount of water to fuel your long runs. Once you’ve found the right fuel for you, don’t change this leading up to the Half Marathon (check out our partners Framar health for advice and information on hydration & nutrition) 

 

4: Running Shoes: if your running shoes are feeling a bit flat, change them now so that you will have broken them in on time for race morning. 

 

5: Night before the half marathon: try and get a good sleep and leave your gear out ready to put on in the morning.  Make a check list of what you need so you are not wasting nervous energy trying to find anything on race morning. 

 

6: Breakfast: do not try anything new, eat & drink what your normally do before your long runs. 

 

7: Race Start: get to the start area early, relax, find your pacer and enjoy your Half Marathon experience.”
