New Year motivation from 60 year old marathon record breaker Oggie
01 January 2018
2018 has arrived, you’ve already broken one of your New Year health resolutions or you’re putting it off until tomorrow. Sound familiar?
Introducing Eugene “Oggie” Winters whose story should hopefully motivate you to get out there, exercise and strive to be healthier in 2018!
The Portstewart man ran the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon in 2012 aged 55 years, marking his first ever marathon.
Therein came the running bug and motivation to set goals and sure enough Oggie (as he is commonly known as in the marathon field) has beat every one of them.
Last year Oggie celebrated completing 300 marathons in just 270 weeks at 60 years of age. His target was to complete this in 300 weeks.
He hasn’t stopped there, Oggie has set the world record for the oldest person (60+) to complete the most marathons in one calendar year in a sub 4 hour time. This amounted to 62 sub 4 hour marathons in 51 weeks (ahead of target to complete inside 52 weeks)!
His enthusiasm and dedication is palpable and there’s no stopping him. His latest goal? This time next week, Oggie hopes to have completed 100 marathons in 52 weeks.**
**As of Monday 1st January 2018 Oggie officially completed 100 marathons inside 51 weeks, again ahead of schedule and he added another sub 4 hour to his total no less!
Oggie has officially completed 354 marathons to date, since he first ran the Belfast event in 2012 aged 55.
Having chosen Belfast as his first ever marathon, Oggie is a massive supporter of the event and encourages you to sign up now for the 2018 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon.
“I love the Belfast City Marathon and it’s one I will never forget as it was my first marathon. I hope that my story helps others to get out and run. After all, age is just a number!”
Close to 17,000 participants are expected to set off from Belfast City Hall on May Day Monday 7th May 2018, in a bid to complete a series of events on the day to suit everyone. Namely the Marathon Run and Wheelchair Race, Marathon Team Relay, 8 Mile Walk and Fun Run.
