Is a strong core important for runners?
One of the most important concepts to consider for a running programme is the basis of a strong core. Your core is made up of many different muscles including your abs, hamstrings, glutes, obliques and lower back and all these muscles working together support your spine/pelvis and help maintain a neutral alignment during your run.
A strong core prevents too much movement from your torso and keeps you from using too much energy allowing you to run faster. Other benefits of a strong core for running include:
- Better Stability
- Improves balance and posture
- Helps with overall control while running.
Some good exercises include the plank, bridges, hip thrusts, side planks and pistol squats.
