Meet the Volunteers - Nicole Bell
31 August 2019
"My name is Nicole Bell, I’m 35 and only took up running in 2017 as a focus after my mum (at only 57) died suddenly in March 2016. I needed something to concentrate on, coming up to her first anniversary and my friend suggested forming a relay team for the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon.
So I threw myself into it and quickly discovered that this running malarkey is a great way to get out and clear your head! I ran the final 5 miles and when I crossed that finish line I was overwhelmed with pride and emotion! I was also addicted!! What a feeling getting a medal around your neck!
My 5 miles soon turned to 10k, that same summer I was determined to do a half marathon! I did the Dublin Half followed by the Belfast Half which I just adored!! My pb for a half is in Belfast!! In 2018 I completed the full Belfast City Marathon! Wow! That was a proud moment but not sure I’ll ever do a full marathon again 😆!
I was signed up for last year’s Belfast half to celebrate what would have been my mum's 60th birthday but unfortunately I took sick and couldn’t run! I was gutted! I’d ran the Great North Run for mum too and as the Belfast Half fell the day after mum's birthday I really wanted to do it, but it wasn’t to be! I deferred my entry to this year but again due to gallbladder issues, my training hasn’t been the same and I’ve been focusing more on 10k’s and speed. I made the sensible decision to not run the half again this year!
I knew though I wanted to be a part of the event so thought I’d volunteer! Volunteers are like angels on runs! They motivate me no end so I am determined to bring exactly that to this race! This will be my first time volunteering and I’m excited! I love cheering on and encouraging others, I know what they are going through so can’t wait to support my fellow runners!" Nicole Bell
