Cancer Focus NI Ambassador and World Cup finalist Shirley McCay urges you to Run for Your Life at the 2019 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon
The Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon is delighted to welcome Cancer Focus Northern Ireland on board as one of their charity partners for 2019.
The event takes place on Sunday 5th May 2019 with a full line up of events to suit all levels of fitness including the Marathon and Wheelchair Race, the Team Relay, 8 Mile Walk and Fun Run, all with brand new improved routes. All events will start at Stormont except for the Fun Run which will start and finish at Ormeau Park.
The largest mass sport participatory event in Northern Ireland raises over £1.6 million for local charities annually and will be encouraging entrants to support Cancer Focus NI as one of five chosen charities this year.
Kathryn Holland, Challenge Events Manager for Cancer Focus NI says:
“Every year in Northern Ireland around 12,000 people are given the devastating news that they have cancer. Thankfully two thirds survive, but we still lose more than 4,000 loved ones to the disease.
We know that the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the more likely you are to survive and treatment can be less aggressive. We also know that a staggering 50% of cancers can be prevented if we maintain a healthy lifestyle, have regular checks and use screening services.”
Cancer Focus NI are delighted to reveal World Cup Hockey Finalist and Medalist Shirley McKay will be their Ambassador in 2019. Shirley is supporting the Cancer Focus NI campaign to encourage you to #runforyourlife to help, not only yourself, but other local people lower their risk of cancer.
“By running the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland you’ll be helping to fund our Keeping Well Vans. Our specially equipped Keeping Well vans bring health checks, cancer awareness and healthy lifestyle information directly to local people in their workplaces and communities with the aim of lowering their risk of cancer.”
More than 14,000 people across Northern Ireland have already visited the Keeping Well Vans. In the last year, 4 out of 10 people who visited the van were advised they needed to see their GP for a further health check. Every £25 you raise will fund a one to one health check and potentially save a life.
You can #runforyourlife and support Cancer Focus NI by selecting them when registering for the 2019 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon. Already signed up and would like to start fundraising for them? Simply email email@example.com or call 028 9068 0771 to request your free fundraising pack.
