Good carbs, bad carbs

Despite what some crazy fad diets say, carbohydrates are still one of our major food groups and, if chosen wisely, can maintain and sustain energy levels during exercise allowing you to perform at your best, provide your body with a good source of fibre for digestive health and support recovery after exercise.
Good carbs, bad carbs

Choosing fibre-rich sources of carbohydrate like wholegrains, root vegetables and pulses is an important part of a healthy, balanced diet and ideally should make up about 40-50% of your daily nutritional meal intake.

Making a few simple food swaps in your shopping basket will ensure you make the right choice.

Swap this…

to this…

cornflakes

porridge or low sugar granola

white bread

wholemeal or rye bread

white rice

brown basmati rice

pasta

wholemeal or spelt pasta

cream crackers

oatcakes

Choose fibre-rich sources of carbohydrate for sustained energy that will not spike blood sugar and insulin levels, and choose a variety of sources like oats, rye, rice and barley instead of relying on too much bread!
