Football star Josh Magennis helps local school raise more than one thousand pounds for Mencap
Nendrum College in Comber has announced that they raised over £1,000 through sponsorship for the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon. Josh, a Mencap Celebrity Ambassador, is the nephew of Ross Williams, a teacher at the school.
“Josh often visits the school so the pupils really look up to him,” Ross said. “When he became a Mencap Ambassador, everyone was keen to get behind the charity in whatever way they could. Josh has been a great support and he has done a brilliant job of raising awareness around the work Mencap does. Our pupils have been keen to learn about the charity and the amazing impact that it has for people with a learning disability in Northern Ireland. Nendrum College and Mencap have created an everlasting relationship.”
Josh Magennis became a Mencap Celebrity Ambassador in November 2016, joining a high-profile roster including actor Kit Harrington, broadcaster Jo Whiley and U2’s The Edge as supporters. Josh added:
“I was delighted when Nendrum College decided to come on board and support Mencap. As an ambassador for the charity, I want to do all I can to encourage people to support Mencap. It was great to see Ross and his colleagues enter a relay team this year and I heard the college pupils plan to run in 2018, which is even better!”
Margaret Kelly, Director of Mencap in Northern Ireland said:
“Josh is a fantastic Mencap Ambassador and we would like to thank him for encouraging Nendrum College to run and raise money for Mencap. The College serves as a terrific example of how schools and organisations can get involved in supporting Mencap and we are confident their efforts will encourage other groups to take part in the marathon in aid of Mencap.
“For any runners who are keen to support Mencap like Josh Magennis and Nendrum College, Mencap is also the official charity of the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon coming up on Sunday 17th September. All funds raised will go toward helping children with a learning disability across Northern Ireland and their families.
“We would like to thank Nendrum College for all of their support and we wish Josh Magennis the best of luck at his upcoming matches!”
